Once a Tale

You are invited to step into the enchanting world of fairy tales like never before. Play as Hansel and Gretel in this unique stop-motion-style single-player 3rd-person narrative adventure where you’ll uncover mysteries, solve puzzles, and meet a reimagined cast of beloved fairy tale characters.

Story

Once a Tale is a single-player 3rd-person narrative-adventure-puzzle game that blurs

the line between video games and stop-motion-animated films.

The game is intended to be an experience devoid of violence and combat, focusing more on storytelling, discovery, and problem-solving.

We want to rediscover the beauty of handmade stop-motion and puppet art traditions. We built the characters and the elements of the environment by hand in our workshop with wood, plastic, and paint before using photogrammetry and integrating them in Unreal Engine.

Description

Once a Tale is literally a handmade game, using photogrammetry techniques (3D reconstruction from photos). We create an experience that blurs the line between video game and stop motion animated film. With a beautiful story and stunning visuals, our goal is to create a truly magical experience.

Once a Tale uses the contemporary medium of video games to showcase other arts, such as the literature and folklore of classic tales. It is a multi-tale universe where characters from other tales live together within a magical forest.

Once a Tale reinvents the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel, with an added twist: the latter symbolically represent two real-world children trying to survive a context of child abuse. The symbolic aspect feeds the narrative structure.

Developed in partnership with our friends at Triple Boris under the collective “2 Igloos”.
